Russel Schmidt

Russel is dedicated to helping clients navigate family law matters with respect, understanding, and a focus on achieving amicable resolutions. With a legal career that began in criminal law, Russel transitioned to family law, where he has been practicing since being called to the Alberta Bar in 2014. Russel is a Registered Collaborative Family Law (CFL) lawyer and a trained mediator, with a deep commitment to resolving disputes outside of court.

Known for his empathetic and approachable demeanor, Russel takes the time to truly understand each client’s unique situation and goals. He prioritizes clear communication and ensures that his clients are informed and supported throughout the legal process. Regardless of the legal issues in dispute, Russel strives to create a collaborative and respectful environment that encourages positive outcomes.

Although Russel strongly believes in the value of alternative dispute resolution methods - such as CFL, mediation, informal settlement meetings, or mediation-arbitration - he is also an experienced litigator. He has represented clients at all levels of court in Alberta and has represented client as trial counsel in both British Columbia and Saskatchewan. When court intervention is necessary, Russel is fully prepared to advocate to protect his clients’ best interests.

Born and raised in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Russel completed his law degree at the University of Alberta, where he volunteered with Student Legal Services for three years. Outside of work, he enjoys cheering for the Edmonton Oilers and spending quality time with family.
